Below a quote from the fon website:
What's FON
FON is the largest WiFi community in the world. Our members share their wireless Internet access at home and, in return, enjoy free WiFi wherever they find another Fonero’s Access Point.
It all started as a simple idea. Why should you pay for Internet access on the go when you have already paid for it at home? Exactly, you shouldn’t. So we decided to help create a community of people who get more out of their connection through sharing.
We call members of the FON Community Foneros. It’s simple to become a Fonero. You just need to buy La Fonera, which enables you to securely and fairly share your home broadband connection with other Foneros.
Then when you’re away from home and you need Internet access, just log on to a FON Access Point, and you can use the Internet for free. You don’t need to take your router with you – you just need to remember your Fonero login and password.
Visit our maps and find thousands of FON Access Points worldwide.
As the world of WiFi is growing, you can do more and more for free. For example soon we will launch the Skype FON - a cool WiFi handset that lets you make free Internet calls from any FON Access Point.
Join the FON Community today by ordering La Fonera – a FON Social Router.
What does being a Fonero mean?
Foneros are members of the FON Community. There are actually three types of Fonero:
* Most of us are Linuses. That means that we share our WiFi at home and in return get free WiFi wherever we find a FON Access Point.
* Aliens are people who don’t share their WiFi yet. We charge them just €/$ 3 for a Day Pass to access the FON Community.
* Bills are in business and so want to make some money from their WiFi. Instead of free roaming, they get a 50% share of the money that Aliens pay to access the Community through their FON Access Point. They can also advertise their business on their personalized FON Access Point homepage.
What is La Fonera?
La Fonera is our own WiFi router.
A WiFi router is a product that plugs in to your broadband Internet connection, and turns it into a WiFi Access Point. That means you can connect your laptop or handheld games console to the Internet without any wires, so you can move around your house freely. More and more devices are becoming WiFi enabled! La Fonera supports the 802.11b and 802.11g standards.
La Fonera is a special kind of WiFi router. We call it a Social Router. That’s because when you activate your La Fonera, you become part of the FON Community. Members of the FON Community share their WiFi at home, and in return get free WiFi wherever they find a FON Access Point.
La Fonera is also a Social Router because you can personalize the page that other Foneros see when they log on to your FON Access Point. So you can tell people a bit about yourself or your local area, or just say ‘hi’ to your fellow Foneros.

Did I mention that Madrid-based FON, launched in February with a $21.7-million investment by Google, Skype, Index Ventures, and Sequoia Capital!
Invitation Program in Europe and USA – Free Foneras!
Starting December 21st Foneros in Europe and the USA can invite their friends to join FON and receive a free La Fonera! If you have an active Access Point you are eligible to participate in our “Fonero Gets Fonero” campaign.

I saw that there already is one "Fon" hotspot at the KLADE GALLERY on upper Pier avenue.
And below an upcoming competitor of FON offering a software based solution to share your WIFI publicly.
"whisher.com"

| This site looks interesting. I have registered and plan on getting a router since it looks like the city council is not going to expand this WiFi network |

| Great, I'm evaluating this option as well. It should be a free network though. But they charge $2 a day for "non Fon router operators". So I will also look into whisher.com since they are still free and work just with router software. |

| My whisher hotspot is now up and running. Everything worked fine so far. But visiters need the Whisher software to see and use the hotspot. Not so ideal. I haven't heard anything from the Fon people yet regarding the free router. Wonder what's goint on there. After I emailed them I got a confirmation code and a automated response that my question will be answered whithin the next workday. Nothing for the last week. |

I was stunned today to read the following positive news about Fon and Time Warner.
partnership announced yesterday between Time Warner Cable and European WiFi company FON offers a hint that competition is growing. The partnership allows Time Warner customers to become "FONeros," a marketing term for the customer who sets up a WiFi hot spot near his or her home using a two-channel FON router. Home users set up the router to create, on one of the channels, a secured wireless network for usage within the home. On the other channel, neighbors can tap into the public signal and surf away. Other FON members get to tap into the public signal for free; non-customers pay $3 - beating the cost of surfing over a T-Mobile Hot Spot at Starbucks.
Great, So I could finally connect a FON router?

Just please turn on IPSEC pass through to gain secure connections so we can work and enjoy your beautiful city.
Thank you!
This weekend I tested the WIFI at Hermosa Beach and was absolutely tickled giddy when I opened up my laptop and was able to connect to the internet and then VPN to my office at Sony and then VPN to Sony Online Entertainment all from this great restaurant called Club Sushi. But sadly I was met with not as much success when I walked with my family to the beach and connected to WIFIHermosa (LA Unplugged M5) and was NOT ABLE to connect to my office through a VPN tunnel. It appears that that the network firewall for that node has VPN/IPSEC turned off to not allow secure connections through. Was hoping to inquire and request of the network admin to turn that on so as I work from home on Fridays that I can come down to your city and beach and work off of your generous bandwidth. And by the way, much kudos to being the first city in the South Bay to do this and do it beautifully. Just please turn on IPSEC pass through to gain secure connections so we can work and enjoy your beautiful city.
Thank you!
|
